Confession and Witness: Jesus Gains His First Disciples

April 10, 2022 Speaker: John Bell Series: The Gospel of John

Passage: 1 John 1:35–1:51

  1. Andrew, John, and Peter (35–42)
  • Come and you will see”: Jesus’s invitation to the disciples (35–39)
  • The naming of Peter (40–42)
  1. Philip and Nathanael (43–51)
  • The “good” that comes from Nazareth (43–49)
  • You will see greater things”: the revelation of the Son of Man (50–51)

Various ways in which the bible uses the term “Son of God” or “God’s Son.”

  • Israel as an entire nation is called God’s Son (Hos. 11:1 “Out of Egypt I have called my Son.”)
  • Angels are referred to as the Sons of God (Gen 6:2, Job 1:6 and 2:1).
  • The Davidic King who prefigures the office of the Messiah is also called God’s Son (Ps. 2:12 “Kiss the Son, or he will be angry.”)
  • As well, citizens of God’s Kingdom whose conduct reflects the conduct of God himself are literally called “Sons of God” (Matthew 5:9: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God)
  • And finally, Jesus is called God’s unique Son. “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son.” (John 3:16)

This sermon series owes a debt to D.A. Carson’s commentary, “The Gospel According to John”
