The Spirit-Paraclete

October 9, 2022 Speaker: John Bell Series: The Gospel of John

Passage: John 14:1– 16:33

Big Picture: This sermon will answer the question, “What is God the Holy Spirit doing, both in the rebellious world, and in the believers he draws out of the world, now that Jesus has died, risen from death, and ascended to the Father?”

  1. The triune God will make himself present to the disciples of Jesus by the Spirit of Truth, and he will indwell God’s people forever. (14: 15-17)
  2. The Spirit-Paraclete will testify about Jesus. (15: 26–27)
  3. The Spirit-Paraclete will teach the disciples about Jesus. (14:26; 16: 12–15)
  4. The Spirit-Paraclete will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin, righteousness, and judgment. He does so because Jesus is returning to the Father and no longer exercises that role himself. (16: 7–11)
  5. The Spirit-Paraclete will glorify the Son. (16:14)

---------------------------------------------------------

  • “Paraclete” texts: John 14: 15–17; 25–27; 15: 26–27; 16: 7–15
  • The word paraclete is a rough transliteration of the Greek word paraklētos (παράκλητος), variously translated “Comforter,” “Counselor,” “Advocate,” “Helper.” All passages apply the term to the person of God the Holy Spirit.
  • The gift of the Spirit is tied to the death and exaltation of the Son.

This sermon owes much to the book, “The Farewell Discourse and Final Prayer of Jesus” by D.A. Carson.
